UCA RECORDS FALL AT 2017 SLC OUTDOOR


    NEW ORLEANS, La. _ The University of Central Arkansas track and field teams broke four school records, including two that have stood for 40 years, at the 2017 Southland Conference Outdoor Championships at Tad Gormley Stadium.

    Brant Cook, a junior from Grand Prairie, Texas, broke Mark Segovis' record in the 1,500 meters that was set in 1977. Cook, who also recorded the No. 2 time in school history earlier this season, ran a 3:50.90, breaking the old mark of  3:52.21. The other men's record that fell came in the 110 meter hurdles where freshman Marcel Keeton of Cedar Hill, Texas, ran a 14.16, breaking the 39-year-old mark of Jeff Shaw, which was 14.2 set in 1978.
    
    The UCA men finished ninth in the team competition. 

    Two more school records fell on the women's side as UCA finished 11th overall. Freshman Olivia Groeber of Rogers broke her own record in the pole vault, finishing fourth overall with a jump of 12-03.50. Her previous record was 12-0, set on April 15. Sophomore Victoria Campfield of Pflugerville, Texas, set the school record twice in the 400 meter hurdles, in both the preliminaries and again in the final.

    Campfield ran a 1:01.73 in the prelims, breaking Samantha Gibson's record of 1:01.78. She followed that up with a 1:01.56 in the final to finish fourth.

    The men's squad missed out on points in the high jump from defending champion Eric Moore, who sprained his ankle in warmups and did not compete. The women's squad also had a costly injury when senior Samantha Gibson injured her hamstring on Day 2 of the heptathlon and was unable to finish. Gibson was in second place after the first day of competition.

    Several athletes turned in UCA Top 10 performances on the weekend. For the women, senior Brigette Caruthers finished seventh in the 10,000 meters in 37:44.37, the sixth best in UCA history. She was also eighth in the steeplechase in 11:38.17, the eighth-best at UCA.

    UCA's 4x100 relay team of Ajah Criner, Lauren Daniel, Jamaris Stephen and Jasmine Richard fnished seventh in 46.90, the seventh best in UCA history. The 4x400 team of Campfield, Richard, Aliyah Robinson and Gibson finished ninth in 3:51.64, 7th on the UCA list. Sara Calhoun went 11-9.75 in the pole vault, the third-best height at UCA.

    Rachel Durler threw 128-03 in the javelin, sixth best in UCA history, while Hadley Swanson put up 4,704 points (7th best) in the heptathlon to finish fifth. Criner, a freshman, ran 11.92 in the 100 meter prelims, tied for ninth-best at UCA. She also ran 24.89 in the 200 prelims, the fifth best at UCA.

    On the men's side, freshman Zachary Jewell of Mena ran a 10.49 in the 100 meter prelims, the sixth-best time in school history. UCA 4x100 relay team of Jewell, James Lassiter, Jeriah Johnson and Ethan Bly finished fourth in a time of 40.84, tied for fifth-best at UCA.
