RICHMOND, Ky. – On paper, a very offense-heavy game with 47 combined shots between the Central Arkansas women's soccer team and Eastern Kentucky ended with the home Colonels winning 1-0 Friday afternoon.
The Bears (3-5, 0-2 ASUN) dominated the match for stretches, including most of the first half, but a solid defensive effort from the Colonel goalkeeper kept the Bears' hopes of a road win in conference on ice.
Eastern Kentucky jumped out to start the match, earning a couple of shots in the first few minutes. After weathering the storm, the Bears broke out and were able to control possession, resulting in
Megan Moudy's shot in the eighth minute and a
Brianna Lopez shot forcing a save just a short while later. The teams traded possession throughout the first half, but the Bears were in the driver's seat for much of the first 45, taking 19 shots and putting 13 of them on frame. Unfortunately for Central Arkansas, however, the match remained scoreless at the break.
The second half continued to be a back-and-forth showing, with both sides forcing saves from the other keeper over the first ten minutes. But in the 58
th minute, a shot from the Colonels finally broke through, and suddenly, in a game that felt like Central Arkansas could have five or six goals, they desperately needed at least one.
Moudy nearly responded off the ensuing kickoff, putting a shot on target just seconds later, but the EKU keeper continued to stonewall the Bears. Central Arkansas took five shots in the following ten minutes after allowing the score, but came up empty. As time wound down, the Bears continued to try to throw numbers forward to find an equalizer, but the home team just wouldn't budge, and Central Arkansas came up short.
The Bears stay on the road for the next ASUN match, playing at Bellarmine on Sunday before returning home for the next pair of games. Kickoff against the Knights is set for 12 p.m. CT.
