CONWAY, Ark. – The Atlantic Sun Conference has released its Academic All-ASUN teams for the indoor track and field season, and the Bears earned several spots on both teams. In all, five Bears across both the men's and women's teams earned the honor.
"These individuals work just as hard in the classroom as they do at the track. This is a great testament to their character and work ethic," Head coach
Josey Weaver said of his group. "We challenge all of our athletes to be the best version of themselves in everything that they do, and these Bears certainly live up to that challenge."
To qualify for a spot on the team, athletes must be 50 percent done with an undergraduate degree or completing a post-graduate degree, and have at least a cumulative GPA of 3.50. In addition, the athlete must have earned points in the ASUN Indoor Championships.
From the men's side,
Malik Beasley,
Kobe Gill and
Pete Johnson earned a place on the squad. Beasley is working on a master's degree in education, and holds a 3.83 cumulative GPA. The Horatio, Arkansas native placed third in each of his events at the Indoor Championships, with a 15.95m in the shot put and a 19.47m mark in the weight throw. Gill, a post-baccalaureate college student personnel administration major, maintains a 3.6 GPA while dominating the sprints. Gill took home gold in the 60m dash, silver in the 4x400m, and placed fourth in the 200m. Johnson, a bronze medalist with the distance medley team, is working towards a physical therapy degree, and holds a 4.0 GPA.
On the women's team,
Anna Bommes and
Kylie Coleman captured spots on the All-Academic team. Bommes is a 4.0 student getting a master's in biology, and she had two top-five finishes at the ASUN Indoor Championships. She placed fourth in the distance medley, and claimed fifth in the 800m, helping the Bears with nine points at the Championships. Coleman is also a 4.0 student-athlete, majoring in exercise science. The junior took home silver in the pole vault, eclipsing 3.42m to score eight points for the Bears.
