CONWAY, Ark. – The Central Arkansas women's soccer team takes to the road for the next pair of games, first heading to Austin Peay on Thursday. Playing the Governor's for the second time in program history, the Bears take the field at 6 p.m. CT in Clarksville, Tenn.
The Bears take with them a 4-5-3 overall record in 2023, with a 3-0-1 start to the conference slate. Central Arkansas stayed unbeaten with a 0-0 draw on Sunday, picking up a third ASUN shutout against Stetson.
Kelly Van Gundy was relentless against the Hatters, putting six shots on goal and keeping pressure on the keeper the entire 90 minutes.
Van Gundy has been one of the work horses for the Bears this season, leading the team with nine points, putting three goals and three assists on her stat sheet. She, along with
Sydney Brough and
Megan Moudy, lead the team with three goals, and she is also tied with
Trace Pavatt with three assists. But Central Arkansas has received offensive support from a number of sources this year, with nine Bears scoring goals and ten logging assists.
In goal,
Kajsa Pruner has been the primary keeper since ASUN matches started, playing all 360 minutes. In the four matches, she has allowed just a single goal, that coming against the reigning champion FGCU Eagles. Otherwise, Pruner has made 13 saves on a 93 percent save rate, keeping a goals against average of 0.25.
Last season's matchup with the Governor's was the first-ever meeting, and Central Arkansas took game one in Conway. Brough scored the game-winner in the middle of the second half, receiving an assist from Pavatt. But the highlight of the game was the defense and keepers, for certain: the Bears were outshot 20-5 against the Governors, including an 8-2 disadvantage in shots on goal. Brough's score was one of two shots the Austin Peay keeper had a chance to save, and the goalie didn't come up with it.
This season, the Governors enter the game with a 4-7-1 record, having started 2-2 in conference. Austin Peay has gone back and forth since the start of league play, alternating wins and losses by game. The first three were all one-score games, before falling 3-0 to North Florida this past Sunday. The Ospreys came out of the gate swinging, scoring two goals in the first three minutes that the Governors never recovered from.
Austin Peay's leading scorer this season is Aniyah Mack, who has five goals this season. Mack had a stretch of three-straight games during nonconference scoring a goal, and now has two scores during ASUN matches. The Governors also have two other multi-goal scorers, and four other players with one goal. Between the posts, Katie Bahn has been the primary keeper, playing all but 53 minutes this year. She holds a 2.02 goals against average, and has 55 saves with 23 goals allowed.
Kickoff against Austin Peay is set for 6 p.m. on Thursday, being played in Clarksville, Tenn. The match will be streamed on
