CONWAY, Ark. – Shifting back for a nonconference game, the Central Arkansas men's soccer team heads to the Gateway to the West for a Tuesday matchup with the Billikens. Kickoff in Saint Louis is set for 7 p.m. against a team that is receiving votes in most major polls.
The Bears (2-6-2, 1-2-1 ASUN) are looking to hit the refresh button on Tuesday after dropping a 3-2 final score at Jacksonville over the weekend. Despite goals from Dion Travis and
Pietro Fontana, the Bears were playing from behind after trailing 1-0 at the break, putting Central Arkansas behind the eight ball.
Travis notched his first goal of the season in the loss, but tallied himself as the eighth Bear to score this season. Fontana added to his team-leading count, now up to eight goals this year. It marks the third-straight season that Central Arkansas has had an eight-goal scorer. His total ranks 14
th in the nation and second in the conference.
Central Arkansas faces a Saint Louis team that is receiving votes in several polls, adding them to an already impressive nonconference slate. With the Billikens receiving national attention, they become the fourth team that the Bears will face while on national polls, and the sixth nonconference opponent that has appeared on at least one poll this year.
The Billikens (6-3-2, 4-0-1 A-10) have been on cruise control since the start of conference play, allowing just a single goal in five A-10 matches. Saint Louis is currently on a three-game winning streak, with all three wins coming via shutout. In fact, it has been since September 8
th since the Billikens last dropped a match, falling to SMU in a nonconference swing.
Last time out, the Billikens needed an 85
th-minute goal from Diego Konincks to take away a 1-0 win over LaSalle. It marked the third goal of the season for the fifth-year defender, and his first game-winner of the season. Konincks now ranks second on the team in goals, one shy of team-leader CJ Coppola.
But the defense has been the calling card for Saint Louis this season, giving up just a 0.727 goals allowed average, or eight goals in 11 matches. Behind a goalkeeping duo of Jeremi Abonnel and Mason Hart, the Billikens have the seventh-best save percentage in all of college soccer, stopping 84 percent of shots on goal.
Kickoff against the Billikens is set for 7 p.m. in Saint Louis. The game will be streamed on ESPN+, with live stats available online.
