CONWAY, Ark. – The Central Arkansas men's soccer team is adding a former Washington Husky as its new volunteer goalkeeper coach, inking Sam Fowler to join the staff to help out the Bears between the posts.
"We are very excited to add Sam to our coaching staff. Through the interview process he quickly stood out with the level of care and detail he brought to the tasks we gave him," Head coach
Kyle Segebart said. "His background as a player and big game experience will be a great asset to all of our players and we couldn't be more excited to have him start his college coaching journey with us at UCA."
Fowler indeed has plenty of high-level experience from his playing days at Washington, where he won 53 games in goal, including 28 shutouts. Consistently one of the best goalkeepers in the country, he held a career goals against average of 0.858, and in 2021, led his team to a National Championship appearance, with NCAA Tournament wins over Portland, Indiana, Saint Louis and Georgetown.
In addition to his storied collegiate career, Fowler also spent time with the Seattle Sounders and the Tacoma Defiance, with both Training Camp invites and appearances in the Slovakia Cup for the US Men's National Team. Outside of playing, Fowler was deeply involved in youth training and coaching, helping organize and run camps during his time at Washington, as well as with Seattle United and Seattle Public Schools. He's worked with kids as young as seven, up through helping his former team at the collegiate level, teaching all levels of goalkeeping, from fundamentals to more high-level technical aspects of goalkeeping.
Fowler joins a program that has never finished below .500 in ASUN matches, logging multiple appearances in the ASUN Championship Final. The goalkeepers at Central Arkansas have led the conference in save percentage several times since the program joined the league, and Fowler's experience and IQ can only aid that endeavor as the program continues its success.
