CONWAY, Ark. – Closing out the final road match of the regular season, the Central Arkansas women's soccer team faces off with North Florida on Sunday. With an opportunity to lock up the No. 2 seed, the Bears kick off against the Ospreys at 12 p.m. CT.
Last time out saw the Bears earn a 1-1 draw against Jacksonville, moving their record to 7-6-4 on the year, with a 6-1-2 record in conference. Despite a season-best 24 shots, and 12 on frame, the Central Arkansas offense just couldn't find that extra spin or last touch to pull out a second goal.
Sydney Brough punched home the lone score for the Bears, logging her fourth goal of the season. She joins
Megan Moudy and
Kelly Van Gundy in the four-plus goal club, and all of Brough's goals have come in ASUN matches.
Central Arkansas has had the second-best offense in the conference since ASUN play started, logging 15 goals in nine matches while only allowing five. The ten-goal differential is also the second-best in the ASUN, and is a major reason for the Bears being in second place with just two games remaining.
Kajsa Pruner has been excellent in goal, stopping nearly 90 percent of shots on goal and recording four shutouts.
The Bears took the one and only meeting with the Ospreys two seasons ago, a 3-0 win in Jacksonville. After opening the scoring in the 20
th minute, the Bears would take a 2-0 lead in just the first half, adding a third goal in the second to secure the win.
North Florida hosts the Bears with a 4-7-5 overall record, standing 2-4-3 in ASUN matches. Currently, the Ospreys are in a two-team fight for the final spot in the ASUN Championship, with nine points in the table. Last time out, the Ospreys fell 1-0 to North Alabama, allowing a 69
th minute goal as the only score in the match. North Florida outshot the Lions 10-6, putting six shots on frame, but couldn't get any past the Lion keeper.
The Ospreys come into Sunday's match with the offense in a funk; North Florida hasn't scored multiple times in a match since a 3-0 win over Austin Peay back in late September. Five matches later, and North Florida has only scored twice, once against Bellarmine and once against Kennesaw State. Some of it seems to be bad luck, the Ospreys have put 88 of their 195 shots on frame, just over 45 percent, but have only tallied 15 scores, or just 17 percent of their shots on goal. On the other hand, North Florida's opponents have put 68 shots on target and scored on 22, or 32 percent.
Paige McSwigan leads the team with three goals, and also has three assists to her name, tallying nine points this season. She is joined by Jersi Dadah, Sophia Goetz and Kayla Bond as multi-goal scorers this season. Laurent Weiss leads the team with four assists, having taken zero shots this year, but helping to put four shots in the net.
Kickoff against the Ospreys is set for 12 p.m. CT out in Jacksonville, Fla. The match will be streamed on ESPN+, with live stats available online.
