Bears Set to Take on Dolphins in ASUN Match

CONWAY, Ark. – With just a few games left in the season, the Central Arkansas women's soccer team hits the road to close out its final weekend away from home. The Bears will start at Jacksonville on Thursday, kicking off against the Dolphins at 6 p.m. CT.

Central Arkansas has been on a run during the ASUN portion of the schedule, building a 6-1-1 record to headline a 7-6-3 overall slate. Last weekend saw the Bears pick up back-to-back wins at home, defeating both Bellarmine and Eastern Kentucky. Kelly Van Gundy tallied a goal in each game, adding an assist against EKU, garnering her first ASUN Player of the Week award as a result. Both of Van Gundy's goals were game-winners, and lifted her season total to a team-best five scores.

Van Gundy leads the team in both goals and assists this season, with five and four, respectively. She and Trace Pavatt are the lone Bears with both multiple goals and multiple assists, and are two of four players to log multiple goals this year. Since ASUN play started, Van Gundy has three goals and all four of her assists, making her one of three ASUN players to have ten points in conference games. Her effort on the pitch has the Bears in second place in the conference standings. With only three games left, Central Arkansas stands as one of just two programs to clinch a spot in the ASUN Championship.

The Bears and Dolphins have only faced off once in program history, taking place in 2021. The 1-0 final went nearly the entire distance, with Central Arkansas tallying the game-winner in the 102nd minute of action, back when games could be decided in extra time. The Bears held Jacksonville to just two shots all day, with neither being on target.

Jacksonville enters the weekend at 2-10-3, with a 0-7-1 record in conference matches. But despite the record, the Dolphins have shown an ability to keep opponents out of the goal,  with two of the last three opponents scoring one or fewer goals. Where the Dolphins have struggled, though, is offensively: Jacksonville has not scored in six of the eight ASUN games this season.

Ten of the 16 goals this season have come from two players, Lillian Young and Ines Martin. Young leads the team with six goals, while Martin has four. But despite being responsible for 62 percent of the team's goals, the two Dolphins have just one game-winner between them, coming off the foot of Young against Warner University.

Kickoff against the Dolphins is set for 6 p.m. CT. The game will have live stats available online, but will not be streamed.
