CONWAY, Ark. – Remaining on the road for their next match, the Bears head to the Bluff City to take on Memphis Tuesday night. Winners of the last two matchups between the teams, Central Arkansas takes its three-game winning streak to Memphis to take on the Tigers. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at the Billy J. Murphy Track and Soccer Complex.
Last time out for the Bears (3-2-1, 2-0 ASUN), the team took home a 1-0 win over Bellarmine. A tightly contested game for 90 minutes, Central Arkansas won on an own goal by the Knights, as a clearance ricocheted off of another defender and into the net.
Karim Diao created the opportunity on a mad dash up the left sideline, cutting into the box near the endline and forcing the defenders to react to the danger.
More importantly than how the goal was scored, the win gives Central Arkansas its second conference victory in two matches. The Bears are one of three teams left in the ASUN to hold a perfect conference record through two games, along with Lipscomb and Stetson.
Through six matches, seven Bears have tallied goals, with
Sebastian Andreassen scoring twice. The Norwegian is also tied for team lead in assists, having two of those, along with
Bradyn Knutson.
Central Arkansas has won the last two battles with Memphis, including a 3-2 victory at home last year. After scoring the first two goals, Central Arkansas allowed two goals in the 80
th and 81
st minutes to level the score. But
Karim Diao would play hero in the 88
th minute, reclaiming the lead with just over two minutes left on the clock.
In 2019, current graduate assistant
Niklas Brodacki tallied a first-half hat trick on the Tigers, dropping three goals in a 4-1 rout in Memphis.
The Tigers host the Bears with a 3-1-1 record, winning their opening American Athletic Conference match over SMU on Saturday. In a match that saw 29 combined shots, Memphis came away with a 1-0 win, off of a 65
th minute goal from Alberto Cruz, his second goal of the year.
Defense has been the calling card for the Tigers this season; through five matches, they have only allowed two scores, one in a draw against College of Charleston, with the other coming in a 1-0 loss to Xavier. Goalkeeper Colin Welsh has played all but 12 minutes in goal this season, holding a 0.41 goals against average, while making 12 saves and recording two solo shutouts and a combined shutout with Max Kaplan.
Head coach of Memphis is Richard Mulrooney, now in his ninth season at the helm. During his tenure in the Bluff City, Mulrooney has accumulated 53 wins.
Kickoff against the Tigers is set for 6 p.m. on Tuesday. The match will be streamed on
