Men's Soccer to Face No. 3 Washington on Monday

Huskies are highest-ranked opponent in program history

CONWAY, Ark. – Still on the West Coast for their next game, the Bears are set to take on No. 3 Washington on Monday night. Last year's national runner-up, the Huskies are sure to test the Bears in a big way. The second of three-straight road games to start the season, kickoff against Washington is set for 9:30 p.m. CT in Seattle, Wash.

The men's soccer team earned a hard-fought draw in its first outing of 2022, putting together a 2-2 finish against Portland on Friday night. Sophomore Kris Naicker and senior Sebastian Andreassen each notched a goal, helping the Bears build a 2-0 lead before the Pilots mounted a comeback.

It marked the first goal in Purple and Gray for Andreassen, who missed all of last season with an injury after transferring from Young Harris. The 6-5 forward showed why he was a coveted pickup for Central Arkansas, playing from literal goal line to goal line in pursuit of the ball on both defense and offense.

And despite the draw, the Bears got a first-hand look at the kind of game they're capable of playing. For almost 70 minutes, Central Arkansas was in control of the game; Zach Schawl was a wall in the net, the defense was closing tight, while the offense was producing opportunities up top. Portland, a team that made the NCAA tournament last season, looked out of sorts and frustrated before a couple of set pieces went its way late. It bodes well for the Bears.

The next test on the schedule, however, is unlike any the program has faced. Washington, carrying its No. 3 ranking, is the highest-ranked team that Central Arkansas has ever faced. After last season's runner up finish, the Huskies brought back a wealth of talent from last year's team, including goalkeeper Sam Fowler, who finished with the sixth-best goals against average in all of college soccer.

Washington's first game of the season was a convincing 3-0 win over Sacramento State. After a quick strike in the 11th minute, the Huskies tallied two goals in a 96 second span in the second half to put it away, scoring at the 66:10 mark and again at the 67:46 mark. Sacramento State was allowed just one shot, coming in the second half, but it was not on target.

Head coach of Washington is Jamie Clark, now in his 12th season at the head of the pack. With 147 wins already in Seattle, Clark has taken the Huskies to nine NCAA tournaments, including six straight.  Last season under Clark's leadership, Washington lost just one game before the National Championship game, a 3-2 loss to Oregon State, a team that was ranked No. 1 for several weeks during last season.

First touch at Husky Soccer Stadium is set for 9:30 p.m. CT. The match's broadcast is on the Pac-12 Insider, and live stats are available here.
