CONWAY, Ark. - After a hard-fought season, the University of Central Arkansas tennis program earned the ultimate chance to head to the ASUN Championship Tournament in their inaugural conference season.
The No. 5 Bears have earned the chance to play the upset card as they open the tournament with the No. 4 seed in Liberty University. While the Lady Flames won the regular-season dual, it came down to a few close matches to secure the win, and so with that in mind, UCA hopes to turn the tides in this postseason bout.
In their ASUN postseason debut, UCA will have their hands full against a quality opponent that got snubbed from a first-round bye due to a late-season loss. Liberty will hope to avenge that loss, so the Bears will need to be prepared for an amped-up squad. To avoid repeating history, UCA will need to ensure that they can secure the doubles point this time around. One team to watch in that will be senior Yada Vasupongchai and junior Mei Ishimura. In a close battle, this No. 2 squad dropped their first challenge against the Lady Flames 7-6. It is understood how pivotal this match will be in the second half as it may determine the winner of the doubles point.
On the singles side, two players to watch are freshman Sumomo Hamanaga and sophomore Maja Gledic. These players will have their hands full but hope to flip the script in two matches that will ultimately decide the winner. Overall, it will be an exhilarating showcase, but the little things will matter for either team to take the match.
This postseason dual starts at 8 a.m. tomorrow on the campus of Florida Gulf Coast in Fort Meyer, Fla.
