CONWAY, Ark. - The University of Central Arkansas hopes to finish the regular season strong as they battle two formidable foes at home this week.
While the Bears have already successfully claimed their spot in the ASUN Tournament, the goal is to make sure they are riding momentum heading into this tough bout. The opportunity to do that is there as Florida Gulf Coast visits tomorrow, and Kennesaw State makes its journey to the UCA Tennis Courts Saturday.
Heading into the ASUN Tournament, the entire field has already earned their spot, and for UCA, they are guaranteed the No. 5 spot overall. While there is no room for movement, the Bears have a chance to shift around the top four when they battle the Eagles. FGCU is currently 6-1 in ASUN play and is riding high after claiming three straight matches. They now sit No. 3 in the ASUN, but tomorrow will affect the total standings. If UCA wants to change the tournament course, they will call on one of their best players this season in junior Fuka Nonoyama. Nonoyama is 7-0 in conference play at the No. 2 spot this season and will battle with the Eagles Isabella Colmenares. Colmenares is 5-3 in the ASUN and 7-3 overall from the No. 2 spot. This will be the match to watch as the winner will undoubtedly affect the match outcome.
The final matchup of the regular season for the Bears will happen Saturday against the Owls of Kennesaw State. After falling short of making the ASUN Tournament, KSU will hope to play spoiler at UCA's senior day. The Bears will honor four seniors Saturday after the match against the Owls. The four seniors that will be honored against the Owls are Yada Vasupongchai, Chunxi Xin, Nonoyama and Mei Ishimura. All four of these players have played a key role all season and will continue to make their mark in this season's finale.
This week's festivities start tomorrow as UCA battles FGCU at 11 a.m., followed by the senior day match against KSU at 1 p.m. Saturday, both of which will be held at the UCA Tennis Courts.
