CONWAY, Ark. - As the Arkansas landscape sheds its snow, it's time to come home for a pair of exclusive home matches against in-state competition for UCA tennis.
The Bears finally have a chance to see dual action at home this weekend, as they are set for a double-header tomorrow against Arkansas Tech at 10 a.m. and Arkansas State at 1:30 p.m.
These two matches will be fun, as the tennis team prepares to take on two opponents that they know very well. UCA will take their team back in time as they battle the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns to relive their days in the Gulf South Conference. However, this will be the first time since 2006 that these two teams square off in a matchup. UCA won 7-2 to continue their 3-0 all-time series win in that match. So, while these two teams have history, it will be a complete revision, as UCA hopes to continue its bragging rights. To continue their string of victories, the Bears will turn to some of their most successful leaders of the year. This list includes sophomore
Jaeun Lee, who is 4-2 on the season, junior
Fuka Nonoyama, who is 3-3 and senior
Yada Vasupongchai, who is 2-2.
After battling an old friend in the early stages of tomorrow, UCA will battle a constant rival in Arkansas State. This is a rescheduled match from two weekends ago, as they flipped the location from Springfield, Mo, to Conway. These two teams have become yearly rivals, as they have played each other every year since 2011. In that span, the Bears have gone on to win seven compared to ASU's four, including UCA winning seven straight since 2015. The Bears will have a major test to keep that streak going, as the Red Wolves competed in the UCA First Fall Invite. In that first tournament, the Bears were 1-2 against ASU as the lone match went to Lee. However, most of UCA did not compete against their cross-state counterparts and will be a significant asset in the upcoming match. One player to watch in particular is junior
Chunxi Xin. Xin has had numerous successes against ASU and is coming off a big win against UAB's No. 1 hitter.
The first match of the day will be against ATU at 10 a.m., followed by ASU at 1:30 p.m. Follow along on social media @ucaTennis for updates and come out to see the Bears in action at the UCA Tennis Courts.
