FORT MYERS, Fla. – Fresh off a first-round upset over Lipscomb, the women's soccer team buckles down for another David and Goliath match as the Bears take on the No. 2 seed in Florida Gulf Coast in the ASUN Championship semifinals on Sunday. Kickoff against the Eagles is set for 12 p.m. CT.
The Bears (6-8-4, 4-4-2 ASUN) pulled off what many outside of the locker room would have considered impossible, upsetting a Lipscomb team that had allowed just four goals across 10 ASUN matches. But the Bears locked in defensively, backstopped by goalkeeper
Keyla Perez, weathering storm after storm and maintaining a 1-1 tie through 110 minutes of play.
Entering the penalty kick phase of the match, it was all Perez in goal, as the junior stopped three-straight PKs on shots numbers six, seven and eight to clinch the match, pulling off the upset and stamping the first ASUN Championship win in school history.
Hosting the Bears in the semifinals, FGCU downed North Florida with a 1-0 final score in its opening round of the Championship, scoring in the 74
th to advance. Margaret Berry connected on her second goal of the season to keep conference title hopes alive for the Eagles.
The win moved Florida Gulf Coast to 11-5-1 on the year, with a 7-1-1 record at home. It also extended the team's unbeaten streak to nine-straight matches, including a 2-0 win over the Bears to close out the regular season.
In last season's tournament, Florida Gulf Coast was defeated in the first round, falling to Bellarmine on PKs after claiming the No. 1 seed in the ASUN West. After scoring the game's opening goal, the Eagles allowed an equalizer with 92 seconds left in regulation, eventually missing two of the first five PKs to get knocked out of the tournament.
Kickoff against the Eagles is set for 12 p.m. CT on Sunday, and will be broadcast on FGCU's Facebook page. Links to both the stream and live stats are available on the Bears' schedule page.
