CONWAY, Ark. - The Central Arkansas Bears will be hosting their second match in five days on Sunday, Feb. 7, when the Roos of Kansas City travel to face the Bears. This match is the second of seven for the Bears during the Spring Season.
TEAM NEWS
The Bears were without
Edoardo Calzola last Wednesday along with
Ivan Leon due to injury. Another Bear,
Pablo Azcona, went down with an injury against ORU and never returned to the pitch, but the Bears will return the starting eleven all healthy. The new formation Head Coach
Ross Duncan implemented worked out well to keep pressure on the opposition. The formation (5-4-1), kept three center-backs and allowed the wingbacks to push forward while the midfielders turned into more attackers.
FORM GUIDE
Central Arkansas is coming off a tough 1-0 loss to ORU at home, but showed true promise in the season opener Wednesday. The Bears are known to bounce back after a close loss, which showed in the fall, winning two consecutive matches after a narrow defeat. Midfielder
Edoardo Merci was a standout in the match against ORU and will look to continue his good form on Sunday.
As for the Roos, they will also be looking to bounce back after dropping their season opener to Saint Louis University, 3-0, away last Wednesday. Kansas City gave up an early goal in the 15th minute and were unable to recover from there, conceding again in the 53rd minute.
HEAD TO HEAD
This will be the eighth meeting between the two sides, with Kansas City dominating the series 6-1 and the last meeting coming in 2017.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
The Bears had a few standout players in the match against ORU, with
Alberto Suarez picking up the best match rating, while
Edoardo Merci and
Rubyn Singh Gill will look to carry their form into this match.
Bradyn Knutson, who started his fifth match as a Bear, played as the right center-back, denying multiple chances and played a big role in the attack.
HEAR FROM THE COACH
"When you have a frustrating result like we did on Wednesday it is always nice as a coach to be able to play again in a short period of time. That gives you the opportunity to fix what you need to fix quickly and compete again. Sunday is an opportunity for us to prove to ourselves that we are better than what we put on display on Wednesday. Kansas City is a very good team and after seeing them play against St. Louis, they were unlucky to finish with the score line that they did. They have some very dangerous attacking players, are well organized and well coached, and will be very difficult to break down. It should be a good matchup," said Coach
Ross Duncan ahead of the matchup.
HEAR FROM THE PLAYERS
"It's going to be a great game for us. We want to get back to winning as soon as possible and we want to build a winning streak. We're developing a new system right now and I can feel us improving every day," said the captain,
Alberto Suarez.
"After our last game, we're coming into this next one with a chip on our shoulder. The boys are all hungry to prove what UCA is all about, which is winning matches and winning trophies. We're looking forward to Sunday and getting a result," said goalkeeper,
Zach Schawl.
Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 7 at the Bill Stephens Track/Soccer Complex.
