New Orleans, Louisiana – The Central Arkansas Sugar Bears took to the courts on Monday, taking on the New Orleans Privateers in a match originally set for Saturday, but pushed to today due to rain. The delay seemed to have no effect on the Sugar Bears, who cruised to a 5-2 win.
After dropping the doubles point in each of the past two matches, Central Arkansas (12-5, 5-3 SLC) returned to its doubles dominance, taking the second and third contests to secure the doubles point for the 14
th time this season.
Amiru Shimoguchi and
Chunan Xiang gave UCA an early advantage in the doubles contest, pushing their record to 10-5 on the season and 6-2 in Southland Conference play with a 6-0 win over Brittany Johnson and Claudette Gilhespie in the number two match, before
QiLi Ma and
Rada Manataweewat wrapped up the point with a 6-2 win in the number three match against Lea Alguacil and Mar Gendra to make their record 12-5 this season and 5-1 against conference opponents.
Pornpawee Pramethong pushed the Sugar Bear lead to 2-0 to start singles play, taking the top flight 6-4, 6-0 over Trang Dao to improve her individual record to 9-6 on the year and 5-3 in conference matches, before Gendra got the Privateers (9-9, 3-6 SLC) on the board with a 6-2. 6-3 win over Manataweewat in the number six match. Shimoguchi would get the point back for UCA in the number four match, defeating Johnson 6-4, 6-1 for her ninth win of the year, but UNO would respond at the number five, where Yurina Asai defeated
Marli Van Heerden 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 to cut the UCA lead to 3-2. Ma would halt the Privateer rally, and lock up the match for the Sugar Bears, at the number three match, rebounding after dropping the first set to Gilhespie 5-7 to close out the match 6-4, 6-4 for her fifth win of the year, before Xiang added an insurance point at the number two, defeating Anja Luethi 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (3) to earn her sixth win of the season.
The Sugar Bears return home next weekend for their final two matches at the UCA Tennis Courts this season. Central Arkansas will face Northwestern State at 11:00 AM on
Friday, before welcoming Stephen F. Austin at 12:00 PM on Saturday. The Sugar Bears will then close out the regular season on Friday, April 20
th, travelling to Belton, Texas to meet Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
