MA, MANATAWEEWAT SET SINGLE-SEASON MARK AS SUGAR BEARS WIN 5-2

Nacogdoches, Texas – The Central Arkansas Sugar Bears got a record-breaking performance while pushing their winning streak to six matches on Saturday, taking down the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks 5-2.

The doubles competition saw SFA (8-12, 4-6 SLC) pick up a win at the no. 1 slot, as Denise Maxl and Gabi Guilarte took out Pornpawee Pramethong and Hee-Jin Oh 6-2, but Central Arkansas (19-5, 8-2 SLC) got the point back in the no. 3 match, where Marli Van Heerden and Amiru Shimoguchi scored a 6-1 win over Liza Aginskaya and Kaja Ljubic. The no. 2 match saw QiLi Ma and Rada Manataweewat pick up their 18th win of the season, setting a new single-season record with a 6-2 win over Sian Payne and Darinka Tiboldi.

In singles play, UCA would extend with a win in the no.4 match, where Shimoguchi defeated Payne 6-3, 6-3 to move to 16-8 on the year, while Van Heerden used a 7-5, 6-1 win over Aginskaya to improve to 17-4 on the year. Ljubic got SFA on the board in the no. 6 match, scoring a 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 win over Manataweewat, and Gularte cut the Sugar Bear lead to one with a  6-3, 7-5 (5) win over Oh in the no. 2 spot, before Pramethong clinched the match by taking the no.1 match 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 over Maxl. The win moved her record to 10-12 on the year. Ma closed things out with a 6-2, 7-6 (5-3) win over Tiboldi in the no.3 match, moving to 18-3 on the year and tying the single-season record set by Shimoguchi last year.

"We did not play our best, and it wasn't pretty but we were able to find a way to get it done, and for that, I am proud," said UCA head coach Casey Wharton. "SFA pushed us on every court and it was a much closer match than the final score showed. The highlight of today would be Amiru playing injured and stepping up and getting a win when we needed her. I'm very proud of her for that. Another highlight would obviously be QiLi and Rada breaking their  own doubles wins record, that's just pretty remarkable. They have chemistry on the court that's as good as any two players that I've coached and it's exciting to see what they've been able to do in just two years. I'm so proud of QiLi because she continues to do just great. While I'm excited, I'm not surprised. She's an extraordinary young lady and I'm blessed to be her coach. We need to get healthy and get ready for Corpus and the conference tournament."

The Sugar Bears, who are locked into a top-three seed in the upcoming Southland Conference Tournament, will close out the regular season on Thursday in a battle of the SLC's top two teams. UCA will meet conference leader Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in Belton, Texas at 12:30 PM in a match that could have conference title implications.
