Thibodaux, Louisiana – The Central Arkansas tennis team took to the court on Saturday looking to stop a short two-game skid as they faced off with the Nicholls Colonels. The Sugar Bears did just that, picking up a 5-2 with a dominant display in the singles competition.
Lingfeng Gu and Clemence Krug put Nicholls (6-8, 1-7 SLC) up early in doubles play with a 6-1 win over
Pornpawee Pramethong and
Hee-Jin Oh, but
QiLi Ma and
Rada Manataweewat evened things up with a 6-3 win over Mariia Kozachok and Changwei Wei to improve to 13-2 on the season and 4-1 in SLC play. The doubles point would go to the Colonels though, as Andrea Mastrippolito and Ambika Pande would defeat
Marli Van Heerden and
Amiru Shimoguchi 6-4.
Central Arkansas (14-5, 3-2 SLC) would turn things around in singles play however, taking the first four matches finished to secure the win. Manataweewat got things started in the no. 6 match, taking down Mastrippolito 6-2, 6-0 to improve her record to 11-5 (4-1 SLC), before Van Heerden scored a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Wei to move to 12-4 on the year with a 3-1 record against SLC opponents. Shimoguchi would strike next, taking care of Kozachok 6-3, 6-3 to make her record 11-8 on the year with a 3-2 record in SLC play, while Ma clinched the match with a 6-4, 7-6 (10-5) win over Pande in the no. 3 match. The win saw Ma move to 14-2 overall this season, with a 3-2 record in SLC play. Krug would take the no. 2 match with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Oh, but Pramethong would end the match with a 7-5, 5-7, 10-3 win over Gu to improve to 6-11 on the year.
Central Arkansas will return to action on Monday, taking on McNeese at 12:00 PM.
