Troy, Alabama – The Central Arkansas Sugar Bears closed out a four-game road trip with a neutral-site match-up against the Alabama State Lady Hornets on Tuesday. Central Arkansas was dominant in rebounding from just their third loss of the season yesterday, taking down Alabama State 4-0.
The Sugar Bears (13-3) made short work of the doubles competition, securing the 1-0 lead when
Pornpawee Pramethong and
Hee-Jin Oh took the no. 1 match 6-1 from Brankica Orlovic and Marija Blazevic while
QiLi Ma and
Rada Manataweewat picked up a 6-4 win over Reka Szentes and Marine Cartier in the no. 2 match. The wins saw Pramethong and Oh move to 1-0 on the season, while Ma and Manataweewat improved to 10-2 overall.
UCA continued the rout in singles play, as
Amiru Shimoguchi opened things up with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Orlovic in the no. 4 match to improve to 10-6 on the year.
Marli Van Heerden followed up with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Blazevic in the no. 5 match to make her record 11-3 this season, before Ma closed things out with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Gabriela Lackova, improving her record to 12-1 on the year.
"This weekend was a break from our routine, which allowed us to get out of Conway for our Spring Break and play some different teams," said UCA head coach Casey Wharton. "It was great to spend a few days intentionally recharging from what has been a pretty competitive season thus far. The first match, against Troy, we started slow and more emotional than I would like. We picked it up in singles play and fought hard, but in the end we fell short. Today when we played Alabama State, it was a completely different temperament. The girls' resilience from a tough loss was tested. But it was a very positive point to finish the trip, as we travel back home and get ready to face Sam Houston and Lamar on Saturday and Sunday."
Central Arkansas will face off against the Bearkats at 11:00 AM on Saturday, before battling the Cardinals at 11:00 AM on Sunday.
