San Antonio, Texas – The Central Arkansas Sugar Bears took a break from Southland Conference play on Sunday afternoon, taking to the court against former SLC foe UT-San Antonio. For just the second time this season, the Sugar Bears found themselves on the wrong end of the decision falling to the Roadrunners 4-1.
The Sugar Bears (12-2) found themselves in an early hole after dropping the doubles point for just the fourth time this season. Lina Hallgren and Charleen Tiwari gave UTSA (8-7) an edge in the doubles completion with a 6-4 win over
Hee-Jin Oh and
Marli Van Heerden in the no. 3 match, but
QiLi Ma and
Rada Manataweewat evened it up with a 7-5 win over Dinisa Ebahimovic and Sonia Madronal Medina in the no. 2 match to move to 9-2 on the season. The point would go to the Roadrunners, however, as Kylee Kato and Miriam Rosell Canudas fended off
Pornpawee Pramethong and
Amiru Shimoguchi 7-5 in the no. 1 match.
UTSA would build their lead to 3-0 in singles play, with Pramethong dropping the no. 1 match 6-2, 6-2 to Canudas and Oh falling to Ibrahimovic 6-2, 6-1 in the no. 2 match. Shimoguchi got the Sugar Bears on the board in the no. 4 match with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Laura Cabrera, and UCA appeared poised to rally as Ma led Hallgren in the no. 3 match 6-4, 5-1 and Van Heerden owned a 7-5, 4-3 edge over Tiwari in the no. 5 match, but Kato cut the rally short by topping Manataweewat 6-3, 6-2 in the no. 6 match.
Central Arkansas continues its four-match road trip with a pair of matches in Troy, Alabama next week. The Sugar Bears will take on Troy at 2:00 PM on Monday, before facing off against Alabama State at 11:00 AM on Tuesday.
