Belton, Texas – The Central Arkansas Sugar Bears took to the court for a neutral-site matchup with Southland Conference-leading Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in Belton, Texas on Thursday. The Sugar Bears took the doubles point, but were swept in singles play, falling to the Islanders 4-1.
Central Arkansas (13-7, 5-5 SLC) became just the third team to take the doubles point from the Islanders, winning two of the three matches to take a 1-0 lead overall.
Xylia Chunan Xiang and
Marli Van Heerden gave UCA an early edge, defeating Jelena Dzinic and Judit Vives 6-4 in the no.1 match, before
Amiru Shimoguchi and
Krizia Buck dropped the no. 3 match 6-0 to Maider Martin and Kerry Galhos.
QiLi Ma and
Rada Manataweewat gave the Sugar Bears the point in the no. 2 match, defeating Hortense Boscher and Alexandra Belle 6-3 to 15-4 on the season and 8-2 in SLC play.
The Islanders (19-0, 10-0 SLC) rebounded in singles play, sweeping the Sugar Bears to take the match. Galhos took down Buck 6-3, 6-0 in the no. 6 match, before Martin scored a 6-1, 6-3 win over Manataweewat in the no. 5 match. Van Heerden pushed Celia Rodriguez, in the first set of the no. 4 match, falling 7-5, before dropping the second set 6-2, while Ma suffered a 6-2, 6-4 defeat by Vives in the no. 3 match. The no. 2 match between Shimoguchi and Dzinic and the no. 1 match between Xiang and Boscher went unfinished.
Central Arkansas closes out Southland Conference play tomorrow at 10:00 AM, taking on Abilene Christian in Abilene. The Sugar Bears will wrap up the regular season next Friday, travelling to Ruston, Louisiana to battle Louisiana Tech at 3:00 PM.
