Jonesboro, Ark. – After playing a five hour match yesterday and spending hours on the road afterwards, the Central Arkansas Sugar Bears returned to action at 9:00 AM this morning, taking on the Arkansas State Red Wolves in Jonesboro. The Bears showed well on the day, earning a 4-1 victory.
The Sugar Bears (5-3) grabbed the lead in doubles play, taking the nos. 1 and 3 matches.
Nataly Yoo and
Amiru Shimoguchi scored a 6-1 victory over Julie Gauguery and Victoria Roberts, while
QiLi Ma and
Rada Manataweewat took down Sofia Krsmanovic and Sabina Jeresic 6-2 in the no. 3 match. The no. 2 match between
Xylia Chunan Xiang and
Marli Van Heerden and ASU's Shelby King and Victoria Pisani went unfinished, with Xiang and van Heerden holding a 5-4 lead.
In singles play, Xiang earned a victory at the no. 1 spot, taking down Gauguery 6-4, 6-3, but ASU responded in the no. 2 match, where King earned a 6-3, 6-3 win over Ma. Shimoguchi continued her hot start to the season, improving to 7-1 on the year with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Roberts in the no. 3 match. Manataweewat sealed the victory in the no. 5 match, defeating Krsmanovic 6-1, 6-3. The no. 4 match between van Heerden and Jersic, and the no. 6 match between
Krizia Buck and Pisani went unfinished.
Central Arkansas returns to Southland Conference play with a pair of matches at home next weekend. On Saturday, the Sugar Bears will host Stephen F. Austin at noon, before welcoming Northwestern State to the UCA Tennis Courts on Sunday at 11:00 AM.
