Thibodaux, La. – The Central Arkansas women's tennis team returned to action on Monday, taking on Southland Conference opponent Nicholls in Thibodaux, Louisiana. For the first time all season the Bears failed to secure a point, falling to the Colonels 7-0.
For just the second time this season, the Bears (7-2, 2-2 SLC) were unable to win the doubles point. Nataly Yoo and Cassidy Crawford dropped the no. 1 doubles match 8-2 to Stephanie Barnett and Klara Skopak, while Kristina Horsikyan and Bianca Strukelj also lost 8-2 in the no. 3 match to Kateryna Nakonechna and Isla Brock. In singles play, the Bears were able to win just two sets total. In the no. 1 match, Yoo fell to Barnett 6-3, 6-0, and Williams dropped the no. 2 match 6-0, 6-2 to Skopac. The no. 3 contest saw Horsikyan fall to Aubert 6-1, 6-2, while in the no. 4 match Murphy dropped her first contest of the season, losing 6-3, 6-1, 14-12 to Pietersz. Crawford was the other Bear to take a set, dropping the no. 5 match 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 to Katia Jordan. In the day's final match, Amanda Alvarez lost to Brock 6-2, 6-0.
"We knew going into the match that Nicholls is a very good team, and that we would have to play our best tennis to win," said Central Arkansas head coach Casey Wharton following the match. "Unfortunately, today was not our best tennis. We tried, and fought hard, but it just wasn't there. We are now going to reset, put this match behind us, and got to Lake Charles to battle McNeese State tomorrow. If we play our game, I think we have a really good chance to come home with a victory."
The Bears and Cowgirls will face off at noon tomorrow.
