Conway – The Central Arkansas tennis team took to the court for the first time this season, hosting the Alcorn State Lady Braves at the UCA Tennis Courts on Sunday morning. The Bears opened the got their first win under the guidance of new head coach Casey Wharton, earning the 7-0 sweep over the Lady Braves.
Central Arkansas (1-0) opened the day strongly, winning all three doubles matches to secure a 1-0 lead. Allison Murphy and Kelsey Williams took the no. 1 doubles match 8-7 over the Lady Braves' (0-1) Siobhan Ryan-Bovey and Ivana Boberic, before Cassidy Crawford and Nataly Yoo scored an 8-4 win in the no. 2 doubles match over Aida Kelic and Aakanksha Punj. Krisitina Horsikyan and Bianca Strukelj closed out the doubles matches with an 8-2 victory over Patricia Normand and Ann Kazarina.
Nataly Yoo earned the win in the No. 1 singles matchThe Bears continued their dominant performance in the day's singles matches, dropping just one set over six matches. Yoo took down Kelic 6-1, 6-1 in the no. 1 match, while Williams won a hard-fought no. 2 match 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 over Ryan-Bovey. In the no. 3 match, Horsikyan scored a 6-3, 6-2 win over Boberic. Crawford took down Normand 6-2, 6-0 in the no. 4 match, and Murphy defeated Punj 6-2, 6-1 in the no. 5 match. Amanda Alvarez-Bargeuno wrapped up the sweep with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Kazarina in the no. 6 match.
The Bears return to the court on January 31, hosting Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 11:00 am.
