BEARS FALL IN OVERTIME AT MEMPHIS

Patxi Shortsleeve made seven saves for Central Arkansas
Memphis, Tenn. –

The Central Arkansas men's soccer team stepped out of Missouri Valley Conference play on Wednesday, heading to Memphis, Tennessee to face off with the University of Memphis Tigers. Central Arkansas grabbed the first half lead, but surrendered a late goal to send the game to overtime. Memphis picked up the 2-1 victory following a header in the first overtime period.

The Bears (4-7-2, 0-1-1 MVC) grabbed the lead in the 18th minute, as Logan Miller fed the ball to Wes Carson along the Memphis back line. Carson turned up field, breaking through the Memphis (7-5-1, 2-3-0 AAC) defense and slamming the ball home for his seventh goal of the season and fifth in the past five games. Memphis piled the pressure on following Carson's goal, getting six shots after Central Arkansas took the lead, but each one was either saved by Patxi Shortsleeve or missed the net.

Memphis continued to apply the pressure in the second half, out-shooting Central Arkansas 15 to two in the period. Some outstanding goalkeeping from Shortsleeve kept the Tigers off the board until the 86th minute, when Simon Estornel lofted a corner into the Central Arkansas box, where Mark Sherrod headed it home to lock the score at 1-1. Neither team was able to find a game-winner in regulation, sending the match to overtime.

Memphis wasted little time in finding the game-winner, needing just 26 seconds for Shane Keely to fire a cross into the Central Arkansas box, where it was headed home by Fakhry Khulfan to give the Tigers the win.

Carson's goal was the only shot on goal of the day for the Bears, who also got shots from Daylon Schiffel, Taylor Hart, and Logan Miller. Khulfan and Liam Collins led Memphis with two shots on goal each, and five other Tigers added a shot on goal. Shortsleeve made seven saves for the Bears, while his counterpart Conor Hurley allowed one goal for Memphis.

Central Arkansas returns to the field next Wednesday, heading to Springfield, Missouri for an MVC match at Missouri State. The match is scheduled to kick off at 7:00 pm.
