Conway, Ark. –
The Central Arkansas men’s soccer team found the net twice on Saturday afternoon, downing Mercer 2-1 to move to 6-1 on the season.
Central Arkansas took the lead in the 34
th minute when Ethan Miller corralled a rebound and slid it into the back of the net for his second goal of the season. They added some insurance in the 75
th minute when Alex Ghiffari collected a pass from Mickey Segura and blasted it home from 15 yards out for his first goal of the season.
UCA took 14 shots on Saturday, placing four of them on goal. They were led by Miller, who put two of his four chances on goal. Mercer (4-3-1) fired off eight shots on the day, with Carl-Oscar Andersson, Will Betts, and Ryan King each placing one on goal.
Cody Gibson made three saves in goal for the Bears, but the true defensive stand-out was the Central Arkansas back line, which “did a nice job of eliminating any serious chances” according to Coach Ross Duncan. Greg Ranjitsingh made two saves in goal for Mercer.
Central Arkansas returns to road for their next four games, but as they’ve proven already this season, that isn’t such a bad thing. “It’s not ideal, but we’re unbeaten on the road,” Duncan said of the road trip. “We’ve got a good mentality: we go into people’s houses and take wins from them.” The Bears battle the Kangaroos of UMKC at seven o’clock on Wednesday evening, before traveling to Saint Louis to battle the Bilikens of Saint Louis University on Saturday at 7:30.
