CONWAY, Ark. – For the first time since March 17, the UCA tennis team was back in action this afternoon and they were upended on the road at Arkansas State by the score of 7-0.
Kazumi Otani was the lone Sugar Bear to take a set on the afternoon in singles play, stealing the second from Ceara Howey, but fell in the tie breaker, 10-8. Maribelle Siegfried, playing outside the official No. 1-6 singles positions, defeated Janelle Fung, 6-2, 6-3.
In other singles action, Simona Horsikyan fell at No. 1 singles to Marianna Rong, 6-2, 6-1. Tamara Slijepcevic downed Allsion Murphy, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 singles and Janie Newland defeated Kristina Horsikyan, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. Rounding out singles action, Allison Hartman dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to Biljana Milosewska and Ioana Teu defeated Sasha Ruocco, 6-2, 7-6.
Doubles play saw Rong and Teu defeat Hartman and Murphy, 8-3, at the No. 1 position. At No. 2 doubles, Newland and Howey got the best of Simona Horsikyan and Otani, 8-4. UCA did pick up a victory at No. 3 doubles as Kristina Horsikyan and Ruocco downed Slijepcevic and Milosewska, 8-4.
The Sugar Bears will return to the courts this weekend in search of their first conference victory of the year when they host Sam Houston State Saturday at 10 a.m.
