CONWAY, Ark. – The UCA Sugar Bear tennis team got back on the winning track as they defeated the UAPB Lady Lions, 7-0, at the UCA Tennis Courts Thursday afternoon.
UCA (6-9) swept through doubles competition, winning 8-1, 8-3 and 8-4 to secure the doubles point. Kristina Horsikyan and Sasha Ruocco earned their ninth victory of the year at No. 2 doubles and Allison Murphy and Maribelle Siegfried, paired together for the first time this season, earned a victory at the No. 3 spot.
The doubles sweep set the tone for the rest of the afternoon as UCA would not drop a set throughout singles play.
In No. 1 singles, Simona Horsikyan posted her fifth victory of the season, as she blanked Monica Arcos, 6-0, 6-0. Ruocco, playing at No. 4 singles, also earned a shutout victory over Jarissa Greenard, 6-0, 6-0.
In other singles action, Kristina Horsikyan improved to 7-7 on the year by knocking off Fabiola Cardosa, 6-4, 6-2. Murphy also picked up win number seven this year, downing Lauren Valecillos at the No. 2 spot, 6-1, 6-0. Kazumi Otani earned her second straight victory by getting past Maria Cabane, 6-2, 7-6 (10-5) and Stephanie Gonzalez Valero picked up her first singles victory of 2012, defeating Martha Villacis, 6-2, 6-4.
The Sugar Bears will return to the courts this weekend when they will try to earn their first Southland Conference win of the year as they play host to Northwestern State. Match time Saturday is set for 9 a.m.
