UCA TENNIS DROPS FIRST TWO SOUTHLAND MATCHES

DALLAS, Texas. – The UCA tennis team opened the Southland Conference portion of their 2012 schedule Saturday afternoon as they fell 6-1 at UT Arlington before dropping a 5-2 decision to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi later in the day.
 
With the losses, UCA fell to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in Southland play. Meanwhile, UT Arlington and Corpus Christi each improved to 2-1, 1-0.
 
In the day’s first match, UTA won No. 1-No. 5 singles in straight sets. In No. 6 singles, Kazumi Otani captured the lone singles victory for UCA, with a 6-4, 2-6, 10-6 win over Christine Foote.
 
In doubles action, UTA’s Maria Martinez and Nikola Matovicova downed Allison Murphy and Allison Hartman, 8-2 at the No. 1 spot and No. 2 doubles saw Giada D’ortona and Natalia Mayuk defeat Otani and Simona Horsikyan, 8-0. Kristina Horsikyan and Sasha Ruocco avoided the doubles sweep, however, by knocking off Verena Scott and Foote, 8-7.
 
The Bears ended the day by landing a pair of singles victories against the Islanders. In No. 3 singles play, Murphy bested Nicolae Stefania 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-7 and Corpus Christi’s Mia Matuszak fell to Otani in No. 6 singles by the count of 6-3, 6-2.
 
The UCA tennis team returns to action this weekend on their home courts when they host Stephen F. Austin Saturday at 2 p.m. The Bears will be back in action again Sunday morning at the UCA Tennis Courts with a non-conference match against Southeast Missouri State beginning at 11 a.m.
