Memphis, Tenn. –
The Central Arkansas men’s soccer team continued to struggle Tuesday night, falling 1-0 to Memphis to drop to 6-5 on the year.
The Bears (6-5, 0-1 MVC) are currently mired in a four game losing streak, with all four losses coming on the road. Against Memphis (3-5-2) the Bears faced an immense amount of pressure all night, getting out-shot 15-5 and placing only one shot on goal. “Memphis was really good on the day,” said Coach Ross Duncan following the game. “They were athletic, dynamic, and really hard to stay with. They came at us with a lot of pace which made it hard, especially for our attack.”
The Bears weathered the storm until the 84
th minute, when Simon Estornel lined up to take a free kick from 15 yards out. He blasted a shot that curled from the right side of the net towards the left post for his first goal this season. The foul call that set up the free kick drew the ire of the Central Arkansas coaching staff, prompting Duncan to comment, “Out of all of their chances today, the goal was probably the one they deserved the least. But this was our first game all season where we were on our heels the whole time, so it was a fair result.”
The Bears look to snap their losing streak on Saturday, when they return to Missouri Valley play by hosting No. 24 Creighton. “We’re really glad that we get a game in front of our fans,” said Duncan, “we’ve played a lot of games on the road this year, I feel like we’re going to be a completely different team on Saturday.” The game marks only the second time that Central Arkansas has hosted a ranked team since moving up to Division I in 2006. In 2010, the Bears fell to No. 10 Creighton 2-0. The match kicks off at 1:00.
