SECOND-HALF ONSLAUGHT PROPELS BEARS PAST ALCORN STATE

Maddi Poteet and Elizabeth Brady celebrate during Friday's 4-1 win.
CONWAY — After leading for more than two-thirds of Friday's match with Alcorn State, Central Arkansas fell into a tie with the Braves midway through the second half. Less than a minute later, the Bears took command of the game and finished with three unanswered goals as they rolled to a 4-1 victory to win for the third time in four games.

The Bears (3-2) jumped ahead in the first half when freshman Alex Wurst converted on a penalty kick, her second of the year. Alcorn State (0-3) answered in the 62nd minute when Mallory Dayot hit a hard shot at the goal that caromed off the post right to the Braves' Emily Sauer, who knocked it in for the score.

It was less than a minute later that the Bears regained the lead on another penalty kick, this one from freshman Brooke Johnston. UCA gave itself some cushion in the 79th minute when senior Corey Rossi served the ball to sophomore Grace Purtle, who knocked it past ASU keeper Emily Leeming for her first goal of the season and a 3-1 UCA lead.

The Bears capped their scoring three minutes later when freshman Brooke Ballard played a cross into the box and sophomore Maddi Poteet was there to punch it in from just in front of the goal.

The Bears finished the day with 13 shots and six on goal while limiting the Braves to three and two. Sophomore goalkeeper Lyndzey Goff recorded one save and picked up the win in her first start at UCA.

UCA will look for its third straight win on Sunday when the Bears travel to Louisiana to take on Grambling State at 1 p.m.
