NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Sophomore Madison Poteet scored the first goal of her collegiate career on Sunday, and it was all the University of Central Arkansas needed as the Bears scored a 1-0 shutout road victory at Lipscomb for their first win of 2011.
UCA senior Julie Foerster lofted a free kick into the box, where it was batted around. The Lipscomb defense was unable to clear the ball, and Poteet was there to strike it beyond Lipscomb goalkeeper Erin Zerio for what would prove to be the game-winner for the Bears (1-1).
The Bears nearly struck first in just the second minute of action, but junior Elizabeth Brady's shot was stopped by Zerio, who finished with six saves in the contest. Lipscomb (0-1-1) countered with a shot on frame of its own in the fifth minute, but UCA keeper Kelsey Gochnauer was there to stop the shot for the first of her four saves on the day as she recorded her eighth career shutout.
Each team finished with nine shots, with the Bears putting seven on goal. Brady, Kristin Pollard and Brooke Ballard each had two with Poteet adding the most important one.
Gochnauer and defenders Hailey Haynes and Alexa Herbers each played the entire 90 minutes in the shutout victory for the Bears.
UCA returns to Conway for its next game on Friday when the Bears host Arkansas State at the Bill Stephens Track/Soccer Complex at 4 p.m.
