IOWA CITY, Iowa _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears survived the first-half onslaught by the Iowa Hawkeyes on Monday night, but not the one that came after halftime.
Iowa jumped out to a 24-5 lead in the first seven minutes before the Bears could get untracked and eventually settled for a 105-64 victory before a crowd of 9,382 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
The Bears (5-5), behind the hot perimeter shooting of senior guard Dewan Clayborn, battled back from the initial Iowa run late in the first half. Clayborn, from Little Rock Parkview, came off the UCA bench and nailed all five of his three-point attempts as the Bears got to within six points at the 6:20 mark and eight points with 4:59 remaining. But the Hawkeyes (7-5) scored the final five points of the half for a 55-42 halftime margin.
“We got off to a slow start as usual but the guys tried to fight back,’ said UCA head coach Corliss Williamson. “We had a decent effort in the first half and Dewan came in and knocked down some shots for us and got it closer. He kind of energized our guys a little bit. And defensively, we were able to rush them a little bit and get a few steals here and there. And we were able to push the ball a little bit.
“I thought we had something good going there late in the first half.’
But Iowa opened the second half with a 7-0 run before UCA finally made a basket, a Chris Henson jumper with 16:25 left to play that drew the Bears within 62-44. UCA started the half hitting just 2 of its first 16 field-goal attempts (12.5 percent) as the Hawkeyes steadily pulled away.
Iowa hit the 100-point mark for the first time this season with a little more than three minutes remaining as the Bears shot just 18.6 percent (8 for 43) from the field in the second half. Iowa hit 52.4 percent overall in the second half and 55.3 percent for the game. Iowa also won the rebound battle 53-38.
“The second half was just unbearable to watch,’ said Williamson, who saw his team lose its second consecutive game after a five-game winning streak. “It’s hard to watch when you can’t even make layups. We were just not able to make shots, and I’m not talking about jump shots. I’m talking about point-blank layups and shots from five, seven feet from the basket.
"We missed a lot of opportunities that might have kept this game a little closer. You can’t do that against a tough team like Iowa because they do such a good job of taking care of the ball on the other end.’
Sophomore forward Jordan Harks pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds and added eight points for the Bears. Clayborn finished with 18 points, all on three-pointers as he finished 6 for 8 from beyond the arc. LaQuentin Miles, the leading scorer in the Southland Conference, had his second consecutive sub-par game, finishing with just 12 points, seven below his average. Miles was 5 of 13 from the field.
Iowa had five players in double figures, led by Roy Devyn Marble with 19. Aaron White added 17 points, while Melsahn Basabe had 14 points and 9 rebounds, Matt Gatens scored 11 and Eric May 10.
The Bears continue their Iowa road trip with a matchup with the Drake Bulldogs on Wednesday night in Des Moines. Tipoff is 7 p.m.
