OMAHA, NEB. — The University of Central Arkansas Men’s Soccer team fell short in its attempt to upset nationally ranked Creighton Saturday, falling 3-0. The Bears (2-9-4, 1-2-2 MVC) faced their second nationally ranked opponent of the season in the No. 3 Blue Jays (14-2-0, 4-1-0 MVC). On September 11, the Bears fell 3-2 to then No. 2 Louisville.
The Blue Jays got on the board early, as Bruno Castro fielded a pass from Tyler Polak in the eleventh minute and was able to chip it over the head of UCA goalkeeper Patxi Shortsleeve for his 4
th goal of the season. Polak added a score of his own in the forty-sixth minute, as he took a pass from Jose Gomez and broke away from the defense, putting a left-footed shot into the back of the net for his 1
st goal of the season. The Blue Jays’ final strike of the match game in the eighty-third minute. Jace Peters was able to slide behind the defense and put a header in off of a corner kick from Jose Ribas. The goal was Peters’ first of the season.
Creighton dominated the match not only on the scoreboard, but on the field as well. The Blue Jays managed to fire off 25 shots, placing 12 on goal. This onslaught was remarkably well balanced, as 12 different players took a shot in the match, 8 of whom managed to put one on goal. This assault was led by Ethan Finley who took 3 shots, 2 of which were on goal. The Blue Jays also received multiple shots on goal from Tyler Polak, Jace Peters, and Liam Kelly, who all contributed 2 shots on goal.
The Bears, meanwhile, were unable to generate any sort of offense, recording only 2 shots, with 1 on goal. Joseph Cervantes and Mickey Segura each took a shot in the first half, with Segura providing the only challenge of the match for Creighton keeper Brian Holt, who made the save. The Bears were unable to get a shot off in second half.
It was a busy match for UCA keeper Patxi Shortsleeve, who was challenged 12 times. He recorded 9 saves.
The Bears look to improve their fortunes, both against ranked teams and in the Missouri Valley, on Saturday November 5, hosting No. 22 Bradley (11-4-2, 3-2-0 MVC) in Conway. The Bears then face non-conference foe Western Illinois (9-5-1, 4-1-0 Summit) in their final regular season match, before returning to Omaha for the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament on November 9
th through the 13
th.
