CONWAY — Central Arkansas played its best game in the six-year history of the series with UTSA on Friday, but came just shy of putting one in the win column as the Bears dropped a 2-1 decision to the Roadrunners at the Bill Stephens Track/Soccer Complex.
Down 2-0 early in the second half, the Bears (5-7-1, 1-3-0 Southland) got within striking distance when sophomore Kristin Pollard delivered a 25-yard strike past the UTSA goalkeeper to cut the lead in half with 41 minutes to play. Freshman Vanessa Randall recorded her first assist of the season on the score.
From that point, the Bears kept the Roadrunners off the board but were unable to draw even. Pollard and seniors Julie Foerster and Marissa Hicks each had shots to tie, but all were saved by UTSA goalkeeper Danielle Snyder. A header from freshman Alex Wurst in the 77th minute missed wide.
UTSA (5-7-1, 2-2-0) took the lead in the 17th minute on a goal Maria Jose Rojas, then extended its advantage to two in the 49th minute on an Alex Saraceno goal. Just thirty second later, Pollard answered with the score for the Bears.
UCA goalkeeper Lyndzey Goff had six saves in the loss as the Roadrunners took 20 shots with eight on goal. UCA finished with 11 shots, putting four on frame.
The Bears will play their final home game of the season on Sunday against Texas State at 1 p.m., with Senior Day festivities prior to the game.
