CONWAY — The University of Central Arkansas women's soccer team will play its final home games of the 2011 season this weekend, hosting Southland Conference foes UTSA and Texas State in those schools' final season in the league.
The Bears (5-6-1, 1-2-0 Southland) will host the Roadrunners (4-7-1, 1-2-0) on Friday at 4 p.m. and the Bobcats (7-5-0, 2-1-0) Sunday at 1 in the home finale.
UCA, which had its game at Sam Houston State last Sunday postponed, enters the weekend sitting in a three-way tie with both SHSU and UTSA for the sixth and final position in the conference tournament race. Texas State is tied with McNeese State for third place in the league standings.
UTSA comes into Friday's contest having gone 2-2-1 in their previous five matches. After tying UTEP 3-3, the Roadrunners have defeated Weber State and Sam Houston State 2-0, and lost 3-0 to SFA and 3-1 to Texas State.
The Roadrunner attack is led by Maria Jose Rojas and Liv Nyhegn, who each have five goals and two assists on the season. As a team, UTSA has 22 assists on its 24 goals this season – the third highest assist total in the league.
With UTSA leaving the Southland Conference following this season, Friday's game may be the last opportunity – at least in the near future – for the Bears to clear a major hurdle. The two teams have met five times, and the Bears have not only yet to score a win – they have yet to score. The Roadrunners have shut the Bears out in all five meetings, holding a 15-0 scoring advantage in the series including a pair of 2-0 wins in the previous meetings in Conway.
The Bobcats have lost just once in their previous six games, dropping a 1-0 decision to Stephen F. Austin on Oct. 2 before bouncing back with a 3-1 win over UTSA on Sunday. Prior to the SFA loss, they had scored four straight wins, including a 1-0 victory over Sam Houston and an 11-1 thrashing of Grambling State.
Texas State, which leads the series with UCA 4-1 and has won the last three meetings, has outscored its opposition 26-13 this season – led by six goals from Felicia Leask and four each from Serena Hines and Kendell Webber.
Sunday's matchup against Texas State will mark the final game in Conway for the 2011 senior class, which includes a trio of Arkansas products in Little Rock's Julie Foerster and Caty McMains, and Marissa Hicks of Hot Springs, along with a pair of Canadian imports in Jessica Brand and Corey Rossi – both of Prince George, British Columbia.
