CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas athletics department will welcome back the 1984 and 1985 NAIA National Champions on the weekend of Sept. 28, in conjunction with the Family Day activities surrounding the Bears' football game against the Lamar Cardinals.
The Bears, under the direction of Hall of Fame head coach Harold Horton, won back-to-back national championships, with both title games being played at Estes Stadium. The 1984 team finished 10-2-1 overall, while the 1985 squad put together another 10-2-1 mark. Those playoff appearances were the second and third of 10 straight postseason trips for the Bears from 1983 through 1992.
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the school's first national championship, all former Bears from those teams are invited to a tailgate party at the Crafton Alumni Pavilion adjacent to the practice field on the corner of Farris and Bruce Streets prior to the game. The players and coaches will then be recognized on the field during the Bears' game.
