CONWAY, Ark.- The University of Central Arkansas Athletics Department mourns the passing of former student-athlete and distinguished alumnus Monte Coleman, who passed away on April 26, 2026, at the age of 68.
A trailblazer for UCA Football, Coleman was born on November 4, 1957, and went on to build a legacy that spanned collegiate excellence, professional achievement, and impactful leadership beyond the game. During his time in Conway, when UCA competed in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, Coleman starred as a defensive back before transitioning to linebacker in his senior season. He set a school record with 22 interceptions and became the first player in program history to be selected in the NFL Draft.
Matt Whiting, University of Central Arkansas Director of Athletics, had this to say about Coleman's impact on UCA and his community. "Monte Coleman was a great man and had tremendous pride for his alma mater and the teammates that he competed with at UCA. His playing accomplishments speak for themselves, but equally as important is the recognition he received off the field. Monte's high character, integrity, and mentorship as a person and coach impacted the lives of countless people, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to know him. We will always remember his legacy, and he will be missed by many."
Coleman was chosen in the 11th round of the 1979 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins, beginning a remarkable 16-year professional career. From 1979 to 1994, he established himself as a cornerstone of the franchise, appearing in 217 games, the second-most in team history, and recording 56.5 sacks, the fourth-highest total for the organization.
A model of consistency and excellence, Coleman was one of only three players in franchise history to spend at least 16 seasons with the team, alongside Sammy Baugh and Darrell Green. He played in four Super Bowls and was part of three championship teams, earning titles in Super Bowl XVII, Super Bowl XVIII, and Super Bowl XXII, while also appearing in Super Bowl XXVI.
Coleman's career was marked by numerous honors, including being named to the "All-Madden Team" in 1993 and earning Washingtonian of the Year recognition in 1996. He was inducted into the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame in 1998 and the UCA Sports Hall of Fame in 2001. In 1999, he received UCA's highest honor, the Distinguished Alumnus Award, recognizing his lasting impact on his alma mater and community.
Following his playing career, Coleman continued to influence the game and young lives through coaching and mentorship. He joined the staff at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff before being named head coach in 2007. Under his leadership, the Golden Lions captured the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship in 2012 with a victory over Jackson State.
Coleman was also enshrined in the Washington franchise's Ring of Fame in 2015 and named one of the 70 Greatest Redskins, cementing his place among the organization's all-time greats. Beyond his accomplishments on the field, he was widely respected for his character, leadership, and commitment to service.
He is survived by his wife, Yvette, and their three children, including his son Kyle, who has played in the NFL for the Los Angeles Chargers.
Monte Coleman's legacy will endure as a pioneer for UCA Athletics and a shining example of excellence, perseverance, and service.
