CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears will try to make it two consecutive victories over the Arkansas State Red Wolves when they host their cross-state rivals at 6 p.m Tuesday at Bear Stadium.
UCA, fresh off a three-game sweep of the Bellarmine Knights in an ASUN Conference series last weekend in Conway, won the first meeting with ASU back in February. It did not come easy as the Bears scored four runs in the top of the 12th inning to grab an 8-4 victory at Tomlinson Field.
UCA got two hits from junior third baseman
Bryce Cermenelli and two RBIs each from outfielders
Drew Sturgeon and
Preston Curtis. Junior righthander
Tate Busey earned the victory with 4.0 innings of scoreless relief, while sophomore righthander
Gavin Alveti got the save with a scoreless 12th inning.
The Bears, who head back on the road this weekend to face North Alabama in conference play, are 1-2 against in-state schools so far this season, with losses to Little Rock and No. 2 Arkansas. UCA has one more meeting with the Trojans on May 14 in Little Rock.
The Red Wolves (17-22-1) had a rare tie in their last outing on Sunday. ASU and Appalachian State battled for 10 innings in Jonesboro but had to settle for a 12-12 tie after the travel curfew arrived for the Mountaineers. App State, from Boone, N.C., won the first two games of the series 20-7 and 12-3.
ASU dropped to 4-13-1 in Sun Belt Conference play.
UCA's sweep improved the Bears' league record to 7-11 with four conference series remaining before postseason play.
The game will be carried live on The Bear 91.3 and ESPN+.
