CONWAY, Ark - Central Arkansas returns home as they are set for the Prince Centers ASUN debut in this weekend's doubleheader.
The Sugar Bears will take on Eastern Kentucky tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. and Bellarmine Sunday at 2 p.m.
UCA began their ASUN journey two weeks ago with the ASUN Crossover, and now it is finally time to welcome some conference foes to Conway. In the early part of the season, the Sugar Bears are still trying to find themselves as they sit at 3-10 overall with a conference record of 1-3. This will be the perfect weekend to do that as the Colonels arrive in town 5-14 (ASUN 2-3), and so do the Knights at 5-12 (ASUN 1-4).
A few players for UCA to watch for both matchups are sophomore setter
Anna Myers and the duo of outside hitters junior
Alexis Stumbough and senior
Lexi Miller. Myers has been getting more starts recently as she continues to battle in every aspect of the game. She currently leads the squad with 201 assists and is third on the team with 64 digs. For the duo of Stumbough and Miller, these two currently sit one and two in points and kills. Stumbough leads both categories by a slim margin as she posts 114 kills and 124 points, while Miller has 111 kills and 123.5 points.
The two players to watch from the defensive side are sophomore
Lexie Gregory and graduate student
Amari Mitchell. Gregory is the key to any successful evening as she has tons of responsibility as the Libero. Currently, she leads the squad in digs with 152 on the season. As the veteran middle blocker
Amari Mitchell has a similar role but from the trenches. Mitchell has been on a roll recently as she leads the team with 46 blocks. Many of these blocks have come in the last few matches, as she has 18 blocks in the last three matchups.
All four of these athletes will be important this weekend as they start their home debut with EKU. This will be a unique matchup that no one has ever seen before, as it is the first time these two teams meet. From a standings standpoint, the Colonels hold a slight edge over the Sugar Bears for third in the West Divison of the ASUN. That will be something to note as this early conference schedule may have tournament implications. Leading the charge for the Colonels is outside hitter Molly Michalek. Michalek leads the team in total kills with 227 and is ranked first in the ASUN for that same number.
Skipping ahead to their Sunday matchup with Bellarmine, the Sugar Bears have more of an extensive history with the Knights as they have faced off once. The last time that this happened was Sept. 13, 2003, when UCA swept Bellarmine. That probably won't be the case in this one, as both squads are pretty evenly matched. The Knights are led by their offense similar to EKU, as outside hitter Jayme Scott is the player to watch. Scott currently sits at 211 kills which is good enough to place her third in the ASUN.
All the fun will occur this Friday at the Prince Center as UCA hopes to continue to creep up the ASUN standings with two quality victories.
