CONWAY, Ark. _ One of the top scoring teams in the nation comes to Bear Stadium this weekend when the Illinois State Redbirds take on the University of Central Arkansas Bears in a four-game series.
The weekend series has been moved to a single game Saturday (6 p.m.), a doubleheader Sunday (1 p.m.) and the series finale at noon Monday because of weather issues.
The Redbirds (3-0), with a limited sampling size after just one weekend, are second in the nation in runs scored, averaging 17 per game. That is courtesy of a three-game sweep of Belmont in which ISU scored 51 runs. The Redbirds won the opener 27-11 in 11 innings, scoring a whopping 16 runs in the top of the 11th at Belmont. They won the final two games 14-3 and 10-6.
The Bears (1-2) are coming off a 13-9 victory over Bradley in the series finale last Sunday at Bear Stadium. UCA was opportunistic, taking advantage of 15 walks, four wild pitches and a school record eight stolen bases to take the final game.
UCA enters the game hitting .229 but has as .388 on-base percentage after three games. Freshman outfielder Kolby Johnson leads the way at .417 with four doubles and a pair of outfield assists. Junior Marco Navarro hit UCA's first home run of the season, a long shot to right field in the series finale on Sunday.
Junior righthander Mathew Patton picked up the victory on Sunday in relief, going 3.2 innings and allowing just one earned run and striking out five.
