BOONE, N.C. — Central Arkansas redshirt freshman Kasper Andersen netted the first goal of his collegiate career, but a late goal from Appalachian State lifted the Mountaineers to a 2-1 victory over the Bears on Friday at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex.
Trailing 1-0, the Bears (0-3) drew even when Andersen hit the equalizer in the 76th minute to register his first goal, but the Mountaineers (2-1) answered four minutes later on Juan Hernandez's second goal of the day in what would prove to be the winner. Andersen would have one more opportunity to even the score, but his shot in the 84th minute sailed high and the Bears were held without another shot over the final six minutes.
The Bears limited the App State attack for the majority of the match – holding a 14-7 shots advantage and putting seven on frame to five for the Mountaineers, but ASU keeper Jake Chasteen turned six of those UCA shots away to keep the Bears at bay.
Central Arkansas will wrap up its North Carolina road swing on Sunday when the Bears meet up with Campbell University in Buies Creek at 12:00pm Central. They'll then travel to Dayton, Ohio for a pair of matches against Dayton and Fort Wayne on Sept. 8 & 10 before returning home to open Missouri Valley Conference play against Missouri State on Sept. 13.
