CONWAY – The Central Arkansas men's soccer team will take to the pitch at the Bill Stephens Soccer Complex for the final time this season on Saturday, hosting Evansville at 2:00 PM. Prior to the match, the Bears will take the time to honor the careers of
Jacob Campbell
,
Daylon Schiffel
,
Riley Cauley
, and
Taran Meyer
, who will be suiting up for the final time at home.
"Although small in number, this senior group represents a lot of who we are and who we are constantly striving to be," said Central Arkansas head coach Ross Duncan of his senior group. "Character, discipline, resilience, and professionalism all come to mind when you think about these guys. They've all contributed in their own ways and they all will be remembered fondly. To honor them on Saturday will be a special moment for us as a program."
Campbell, a senior from Brandon, Mississippi, has struggled with injuries during his career, but has made his mark on the field, playing 1,569 minutes over 25 matches. A member of the 2012 Missouri Valley Conference All-Freshman team, Campbell played in all 15 of the Bears' matches on the year. After missing all of the 2013 season while rehabbing from an injury, Campbell returned to the field for five matches and 46 minutes in the 2014 season. During his senior season this year, Campbell started the Bears' first four matches before suffering another injury.
"Jacob has been through a lot here," said Duncan. "From coaching changes to injuries, he's seen it all. It's been a tough deal this year after working so hard to get back from his accident and then to pick up another injury that sidelines him the rest of the way. But he's a really important part of this program and always will be. Jacob's proved to everyone around him how determined hi is and he will no doubt be a huge success in life."
Schiffel, a senior from Citrus Heights, California, has had his own injury struggles during his time in Conway, but has seen action in 51 matches for a total of 1,950 minutes. Schiffel has scored a pair of goals and assisted on another while putting 12 of his 36 shots on goal. After missing last season with an injury, he has made a strong return this year, playing in 11 matches.
"Daylon came in and made a really good impact on the program right away as a freshman," said Duncan. "He has a drive and a spirit that endeared him to the coaching staff and has been a pleasure to work with right through his career. His approach to the game is extremely professional and he's a great example of how to treat this experience for our young guys."
Cauley, a redshirt junior from Carrollton, Texas, has also struggled with injuries during his career. Though he has not appeared in a match for the Bears, Cauley has been a mainstay on the Central Arkansas roster for four years.
"Riley brings some great elements to the group," said Duncan. "He's always ready with a joke and he stayed the course here through multiple injuries and not being able to play, when many others would have walked away. There's something to be said for that. I have no doubt that this characteristic will stay with Riley and he will carry it into his next phase in life."
Meyer, a redshirt junior from South Jordan, Utah, has seen action in 10 matches during his career, totaling 751:54 minutes in net. He has a career record of 2-5-0, making 26 saves with a career goals against average of 2.39 and two career shutouts.
"Taran has been great to work with ever since he has been here," said Duncan. "As a goalkeeper, you have to possess an incredible strength of mind, especially when you aren't playing. Taran has been on both sides of that and he hasn't wavered one bit. He's a great teammate and someone who our guys can look up to. He will be a big loss to our group."
On the field, the Bears (1-13-1, 0-4 MVC) will host the Evansville Purple Aces (2-12-0, 0-5 MVC) for what promises to be a big match. The winner will secure a spot in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.
Offensively, Central Arkansas is led by junior
Wes Carson
, whose six goals lead and 15 points the MVC. Carson and freshman
Daltyn Knutson
each have three assists to lead the team, while freshman
Chris Holmes
has a pair of goals on the year. In goal, sophomore
Harrison Veith
ranks seventh in the nation with 75 saves, and eight with an average of 5.00 saves per game.
The Purple Aces are led by Marc Anthony Gonzalez, who is tied for the league lead with six goals and ranks third with 14 points, while Ian McGrath and Zach Blaydes have each tallied three assists. In goal, Greg Niven (33 saves, 3.07 goals against average) and Matthew Keller (31 saves, 2.48 GAA) have split time.
