BEARS FALL 7-4 IN SERIES FINALE WITH LIONS

DH Joey Pinney was 3 for 4 with an RBI and a walk in Sunday's action

CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears committed two errors and had a costly base-running blunder in a 7-4 loss to the Southeastern Louisiana Lions in their series finale on Sunday at Bear Stadium.

The Bears (17-112, 6-6) and Lions (20-12, 7-5) finally found their offenses after a three-hit shutout for SLU on Friday and a one-hit shutout for the Bears on Saturday. The teams had 11 hits each, with UCA designated hitter Joey Pinney going 3 for 4 and reaching base four times with an additional walk. SLU right fielder Andrew Godbold was 3 for 5 and second baseman Jacob Williams was 3 for 4, with each recording an RBI.

UCA starter Connor McClain went seven innings, striking out a career-high eight while allowing 10 hits and five earned runs. The Bears got four earned runs off Lions' starter Sean Kennel, who only lasted 2 1/3 innings, but nothing else over the final 6 2/3 innings off relievers Matt Pittari and Dylan Hills.

UCA took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Chris Townsend's RBI single to left field and Justin Treece's to center. After SLU took a 3-2 lead in the top of the third, UCA came back with another pair of runs in the bottom of the inning on a Scott Zimmerle RBI single up the middle that scored Treece and Matt Anderson's single up the middle that brought in Zimmerle.

The Lions tied it again with a single run in the sixth, then put up three more in the eighth, with the aid of one of UCA's errors.

McClain got the loss to drop to 4-2 on the season. Hills improved to 2-2.

UCA has a non-conference game at Arkansas State at 6:30 Tuesday before returning to Southland Conference play next weekend at Nicholls State in Thibodaux, La.
