BEARS BLAST GOLDEN LIONS 18-12

Tyler Langley led an 18-hit attack for UCA in its 18-12 win over UAPB

CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears overcame an early 3-0 deficit by scoring 10 consecutive runs Tuesday night in taking an 18-12 victory over the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions at Bear Stadium.

The Golden Lions scored three runs on three hits in the top of the first inning but then saw the Bears post five runs in the second inning to take the lead for good. From the second through the sixth inning, UCA scored 18 runs and piled up 18 hits. 

After trailing 18-4, the Golden Lions (7-12) piled up eight runs on just three hits in the top of the eighth inning before UCA reliever Bo Stitch finally got the Bears out of the inning with the final out on a foul out.

UCA senior center fielder Doug Votolato led the Bears' 15-hit attack, going 3 for 4 with 3 RBI and 3 runs scored. Senior shortstop Justin Treece was also 3 for 4 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored. Catcher Brandon Montalvo was 3 for 3 and scored twice and knocked in two runs.

The Bears (10-8) scored 18 runs in 36 official at-bats, taking advantage of nine walks and seven hit batters. Second baseman Chris Townsend had a three-run single in a five-run second inning for the Bears, and Treece capped a five-run fifth with a two-run double down the left-field line.

Tyler Langley, Scott Zimmerle and Brad Dillenberger all added two RBI for the Bears, who host Southland Conference preseason favorite Sam Houston State in a weekend series beginning at 6 p.m. Friday.

UCA junior Josh Markel (1-0) pitched a scoreless three innings in relief to pick up the victory. UAPB starter Sam Olson (1-1) took the loss, allowing five runs and walking four in 2.0 innings.

The Bears and Golden Lions will meet again at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Taylor Field in Pine Bluff.
