BLUE JAYS DOWN BEARS IN COMEBACK 10-2 WIN

Freshman Riley Echols threw five strong innings in his first career start Tuesday

CONWAY, Ark. _ The Creighton Blue Jays scored 10 unanswered runs Tuesday in downing the University of Central Arkansas Bears 10-2 in non-conference baseball action at Bear Stadium.

UCA (8-6) led Creighton (7-5-1) 2-0 after three innings but did little after that, committing four errors and allowing four unearned runs.

The Bears scored twice in the third inning off Creighton starter Taylor Elman (1-1), but he settled down and did not allow another run in going six innings for the victory. In the third, Nick Rougeau and Tyler Langley drew consecutive one-out walks and advanced on a passed ball. Doug Votolato then walked again to load the bases for Chris Townsend, who drew the fourth straight walk, making it 1-0.

Nate Ferrell's sacrifice fly to right scored Langley for the short-lived 2-0 lead.

UCA freshman starter Riley Echols went five innings, striking out five and allowing only one run before being lifted for Scott Zimmerle. He lasted just 2/3 of an inning, giving up three runs, including a solo home run to Mike Gerber, to hand Echols the no decision. Josh Markel pitched a scoreless inning for the Bears before Jon Rand entered and allowed three more runs.

The Blue Jays, who finished with 12 hits, scored three runs in the sixth and six more in the eighth to put the game away. UCA redshirt freshman Landon Mason pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings as the Bears' final pitcher of the day.

UCA managed only four hits off three Creighton pitchers, with freshman Joey Pinney getting the only extra-base hit, a double in the sixth inning.

The Bears open Southland Conference play this weekend at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
