CAUDLE FLIRTS WITH NO-HITTER, BEARS SWEEP PAIR OF GAMES

Tyler Langley went 2 for 4 with 3 RBI in UCA's 7-0 win over Illinois State

CONWAY, Ark. _ Junior righthander Chris Caudle carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning Saturday night and the University of Central Arkansas Bears beat Illinois State 7-0 to win for the second time on the day.

The Bears (6-4) came back from a 3-1 deficit in the eighth inning to beat North Dakota 4-3 in the first game of the day.

Caudle, a junior transfer from Greenwood and Crowder College, was perfect through six innings and then recorded the first two outs of the seventh on ground balls before allowing consecutive infield singles. Caudle then struck out Joe Kelch for the final out of the frame in his first career start. He then struck out three more batters in the eighth inning to give him a career-high eight for the game.

The Bears jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first when Tyler Langley's two-run double scored Chris Townsend and Doug Votolato. UCA then put up five runs in the fourth inning on just one hit. The Bears used two walks, three hit by pitch, a wild pitch and an error to push the lead to 7-0.

Votolato finished 2 for 4 with an RBI and 2 runs scored, while Langley was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI. Sophomore Bo Stitch pitched the ninth inning, allowing one hit and striking out one.

In the day's opener, UCA trailed 3-1 in the eighth when Langley doubled down the left-field line to score Nate Ferrell to close the gap to 3-2. In the ninth, the Bears got a walk from pinch-hitter Brandon Montalvo, who advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored  on a fielding error.

UCA then loaded the bases with a walk to Nate Ferrell and a hit by pitch for Langley. Senior shortstop Justin Treece of Sherwood drew a walk to bring in Townsend to end the game.

UCA starter Connor Gilmore of Little Rock threw seven innings, striking out 4 and allowing 6 hits and 2 earned runs. Stitch (1-0) pitched the final two innings, striking out 3 and allowing just 1 hit, for his first victory.

UCA, which went 3-0 on the weekend, hosts UT Martin at 4 p.m. Tuesday and 1 p.m. Wednesday at Bear Stadium.
