BEARS DROP SEASON OPENER 11-5 TO MISSOURI STATE

Senior shortstop Justin Treece went 3 for 4 with 2 RBI on Saturday

CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears allowed 13 hits and recorded five errors in dropping their season opener 11-5 to Missouri State on Friday afternoon at Bear Stadium.

The Bears, who won a school-record 42 games last season, gave up chunks of runs Friday as the visiting Bears scored two in the second, three in the fifth and four more in the seventh. UCA had a brief 4-3 lead after scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, but MSU answered with three runs in the top of the next inning and never trailed again.

Senior shortstop Justin Treece was the offensive star for the Bears, going 3 for 4 with a triple and two RBI. Treece scored UCA's first run of the season in the third inning, knocking a one-out triple to center field and scoring on Chris Townsend's sacrifice fly to right field.

In UCA's three-run fourth inning, senior centerfielder Doug Votolato started the two-out rally with a bloop double down the right-field line. Senior designated hitter Scott Zimmerle scored him with an RBI single to center. Tyler Langley and Brandon Montalvo followed with consecutive walks to load the bases before Treece singled to right to score two more runs.

UCA's final run in the fifth came on a throwing error on the Missouri State pitcher. Wesley Hoover was thrown out at home attempting to score on a wild pitch, but pitcher Cody Shumacher threw wildly to third trying to get the trail runner Nate Ferrell, who then scored.

UCA senior starter Bryce Biggerstaff allowed five earned runs in five innings, striking out five and walking one to pick up the loss. Schumacher threw four innings of relief for MSU to get the win. Votolato also had a pair of hits for UCA, going 2 for 3 with a run scored, as MSU's three pitchers held UCA to just eight hits.

MSU's Patrick Drake was 3 for 4, while first baseman Conor Smith went 3 for 5 with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored.

Game 2 of the non-conference series is set for 2 p.m. Saturday.
