BEARS FALL AGAIN AS RALLY FALLS SHORT

Senior third baseman Garrett Brown hit a three-run home run on Saturday night

CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears rallied with three runs in the eighth inning Saturday night but it was a run short as Southeastern Louisiana won beat the Bears 7-6 for the second consecutive day to win the Southland Conference series at Bear Stadium.

UCA (31-13, 10-10) lost its first SLC series since the first of the season back on March 22-24 at Oral Roberts. The Lions improved to 30-17 overall and 13-7 in league play to remain in second place in the standings.

The Bears, who led 3-1 after senior Garrett Brown’s three-run home run in the second inning, fell behind 7-3 heading into the eighth inning. The Bears chased SLU starter Tate Scioneaux after Jonathan Davis led off with a single to left field. Davis was out on Ethan Harris’ fielder’s choice but Chris Townsend singled up the middle before senior catcher Michael Marietta blasted his second triple in as many days, closing the gap to 7-5.

After another pitching change for SLU, Marietta came in on a wild pitch to make it 7-6. After Doug Votolato got a base hit through the left side of the infield, Brown flied out to right field to end the threat. A combination of Clint Green and Ethan McKinzie pitched a scoreless ninth for UCA but SLU’s Mason Klotz pitched around a Davis single in the bottom of the inning to close it out for his seventh save.

UCA starter Jeffery Enloe had his shortest outing of the season, allowing nine hits and 4 earned runs in 3 1/3 innings. Brown finished 2 for 4 with 3 RBI, while David and Blake Marchal were both 2 for 4. Marietta was 1 for 3 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored.

SLU’s Ben Hernandez and Harry Slade both had three hits as the Lions totaled 14 for the game.

The series finale is set for 1 p.m. Sunday.
