CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears commited four errors and managed only one hit in dropping a 3-0 decision at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday afternoon in Southland Conference action.
The Bears (27-10, 7-7) avoided a no-hitter when freshman Chris Townsend singled to lead off the ninth inning. A&M-CC’s Trevor Belicek remained in the game and closed it out, finishing with 10 strikeouts to improve to 6-1 on the season.
The Islanders (22-16, 9-5) used two unearned runs to even the series at 1-1, with Game 3 set for 1 p,m, Sunday at Chapman Field.
A&M-CC scored a run in the first inning off three hits, but UCA starter Jeffery Enloe did not allow another earned run. The Islannders put up one more run in the fifth after one of UCA’s errors, then made it 3-0 in the eighth on catcher Brad Lamberti’s RBI single to left.
Enloe (6-3), a senior left hander, went the distance for the Bears for the third consecutive game, but also lost for the second straight week. Enloe allowed 10 hits, all singles, but only one earned run while striking out five and walking just one. UCA lost his last start 2-1 against Nicholls State last Saturday while getting only five hits.
The Bears were shut down by Belicek until Townsend opened the ninth with a single up the middle. Pinch runner Doug Votolato moved to second on a ground out before Jonathan Davis drew a walk. But Belicek got Ethan Harris to ground out to first base to end the threat.
Eric Weiss and Jonathan Gonzalez were both 2 for 4 for the Islanders. Belicek walked two and hit two batters.
